THE PLAYERS: Past, Present, FutureThe Vice President and Executive Director of The Players Championship tells WOKV in an exclusive interview about how far the tournament has come. Ron Cross says the tournament is celebrating its 35th anniversary, however Ponte Vedra has not hosted the event for all of those years.
"In 1977, we moved it here - to Jacksonville/Ponte Vedra, Sawgrass Country Club," says Cross.
The TPC spent its first few years in the Atlanta-area. He also mentions that there are a few factors that will probably keep The Players Championship on the First Coast for years to come.
"The facility. It's the stadium golf course - the TPC Sawgrass. It's the volunteers," Cross added.
About 2000 volunteers are donating their time to keep the tournament in full swing.
Cross says the TPC also gives millions to charity and can generate over one-hundred million dollars for the local economy.
Officials with the tournament say they're already preparing for the 2009 Tournament. Visit the PGA Tour website for ticket information. Add your commentThere are no comments yet. Be the first to post one! |
