'Recount' Premieres in Jacksonville
A new movie premieres Wednesday night in Jacksonville.
The HBO films "Recount" takes a look back at the 2000 election and the events that followed while America tried to figure out who the next president would be.
The film stars Kevin Spacey as Ron Klain, who was Al Gore's former Chief of Staff during the election.
Parts of the movie were shot in Jacksonville and the movie will premiere Wednesday night at the Florida Theatre.
The film's director Jay Roach says the election was something that had interested him since 2000.
"This sort of anxiety dream nature of it captured my imagination and I tried to get involved," Roach said.
He said that the events of 9/11 happened so soon after the election that many people moved on with unresolved questions about what happened.
"I think a lot of us kind of have a repressed memory of the 36 days afterward," Roach said.
He feels that people are still interested in hearing more about the 2000 election. Especially people in Florida who he expected would want to put election behind them but were instead very curious.
He thinks that his film presents a very fair view of the election, bouncing between the Republican and Democratic point of view.
"I think people will see that we were committed to tell a fair version of both sides point of view," Roach said they have showed it to some in Washington who came away with the feeling that it was fair.
But more than anything else, he wants his film to make people more interested in the election process and how fragile but important it is.
"I guess what I hope the film does is raise questions about how to do it better," Roach said.
The film will air on HBO on May 25 at 9 p.m.
