Putnam Murder Suspect Returned to FloridaThe man accused of beating, stabbing and suffocating an elderly Melrose man, then fleeing to Texas with his 15-year-old girlfriend is back in Florida to answer a capital murder charge. ![]() Toby Lee Lowry, 22, was arrested May 3 in El Paso. 15-year-old Morgan Leppert was also charged with the murder of James Stewart. Leppert became the focus of a nationwide Amber Alert after disappearing from her San Mateo home on April 22. Police say she is still in juvenile custoy in Texas. It is unknown when she will return to Putnam County. Lowry is also charged with grand theft auto and interfering with a child's custody. Investigators say the couple targeted Stewart because he was disabled and hard of hearing. Leppert first made contact with the victim, faking an emergency to gain access to his house. Police say on April 25th, Leppert and Lowry attacked Stewart, stole cash and took off in his 2003 Toyota Tacoma. The couple made stops in Cedar Key, Gainesville and Valdosta, Georgia before picking up a hitchiker and heading west on Interstate 10. The hitchiker, who is wanted for a prostitution charge in Marion County, Fla, is not connected to the homicide. Putnam County Sheriff Dean Kelly tells WOKV he wants the teen charged as an adult for the murder, but says the decision will be made by the State Attorney's office.
