Pollution Credits For Jacksonville?
Jacksonville could have to pay for the storm water runoff into the St. Johns River.
A newly enacted Florida law will establish a trading system for the lower St. Johns River to reduce the amount of pollution in the River.
"There's a requirement to improve the quality of storm water and waste water discharge going into the St. John's River and we are committed to do that," City Spokeswoman Susie Wiles said.
She said they can improve their storm water system, and also their waste water treatment system to meet the new clean requirements.
"The most immediate method we can use to improve the discharge going into the St. Johns River is drainage and storm water improvements," Wiles said.
But it will be tough to meet the new standards by September and they will probably need to buy pollution credits from cleaner businesses.
Wiles said they will use the money they get from the new storm water fee to pay for any improvements or credits they need to buy.
