Duval County Public Schools breaks ground on a new high school Friday.  This $77 million project is at Baymeadows Road and 9A on R.G. Skinner Parkway.

For now it's called "High School Triple A".

It's the first high school for Duval County in 20 years.  "The last two high schools that were open are both Mandarin High School and First Coast High School," says Jill Johnson, Supervisor of External Communications & Media Relations.

Johnson says it'll relieve overcrowding at other high schools like Wolfson and Sandalwood.  It will also service incoming freshman from Twin Lakes, Southside, DuPont and Kernan middle schools.

The district says money and space are the reasons it took so long to build a new high school.

Johnson says they're also looking to the future because the site has enough space to build more.  "In future plans we're hoping to also open a K-8 next door," says Johnson.

The new high school should open in Fall 2010.
