The U-S congress considers renewing a program that is important to many in the Sun Shine State.

They are working towards renewing the National Flood Insurance Program, which offers insurance to 95% of Florida communities.

"Basically, the federal government acts as your insurance carrier for flood insurance," said Mike Barry with the Insurance Information Institute.

He said it is the only place where you can get basic flood insurance, and it is important to check with FEMA to see if you need it.

"FEMA may have decided to put your community into a flood zone, and you may not even know it," Barry said.

He said it is not just people, who live on the coast, but people who live near rivers and streams that also live in flood zones.

The insurance pays up to a quarter million dollars for damage to your home and up to 100-thousand for damage to things in it.

Both Houses of congress will have to iron out their difference before they can send the bill onto the president.
