Mid First Round Thoughts From THE PLAYERS

I think that Sergio Garcia's 66 is a pretty terrific score and I don't think anyone will catch him today. The course is warm and there is a little wind, and the greens will be less receptive as the day goes on, and perhaps, as the week goes on.

Among the afternoon starters, only the top players are making headway. Stewart Cink, Adam Scott, Chris DiMarco and Ernie Els, for instance.

-You have to hand it to Dustin Johnson. At around 7:00 this morning, he got text message saying that he was playing in THE PLAYERS. He's the one who replaced Trevor Immelman. Johnson told me that he prepared like he was going to play all week, but as an alternate, you never know. Johnson shot 1-over 73 on the first round.

-In case you want to come out to see Phil Mickelson (2-under 70 on Thursday) play on Friday, he'll tee off from the 1st hole at 1:33 pm along with Rory Sabatini and Henrick Stenson.
