Late Morning Observations at THE PLAYERS

Sad story about Jeff Maggert's older brother dying in a single engine plane crash in Colorado.  Of course, Maggert has pulled out of the tournament.  It made me think of all of the travel that these guys do, many of them on private planes or small planes with fractional ownership.  We had the tragedy with Paine Stewart a few years ago, and to be honest, I'm surprised that we haven't had more.  It's just a matter of the number of times that these guys go up in small planes or helicopters.

I'm thankful that we haven't had any more of these tragedies.

-Robert Garrigus was having a forgettable Players, until a hole in one on the par 3 13th.  It's the first ace of the tournament.

-I think that Anthony Kim is going to be put to the test today.  The young gun, who just won his first PGA Tour event last week, is in contention.  As I write this, he's 2-under today, 4-under for the tournament.  What a story it would be if Kim filled Tiger Woods' shoes this week.  As great as Tiger is, the tour needs "the next big thing" to come along.  Maybe Kim can be that guy.

-A few notable afternoon tee times:  Steve Elkington: 12:20, Fred Couples: 12:51, Davis Love III, 1:12, Phil Mickelson: 1:33,
