Irrigation Rules Could Change
The St. Johns River Water Management District wants to change the current irrigation rules. It would affect how many and what days you're able to water your lawn and the water you could use.
As the rules stand now you can only water 2 days a week before 10 am or after 4 pm.
That could change and it would depend on the time of year. During daylight savings time it would still be 2 days a week but only on certain days because "the irrigation days would be specified by address," says Senior Communications Specialist Teresa Monson.
During Eastern Standard Time "irrigation would be limited to no more than one day a week".
Monson says the hours your allowed to irrgate would stay the same.
Another major change to the rule is that conservation efforts would be expanded to include reclaimed water and storm water which are now exempt.
The first two public workshops on this created questions from the public and public utilities.
At least 100 people showed up to two public workshops in Seminole and Indian River counties to talk about the new irrigation rules.
Spokesman Dwight Jenkins says the public's concern was obvious. The concerns include "how it will affect their ability to maintain their lawn and landscape, how it will affect their irrigation system," says Jenkins.
However, utilities are worried also about disposing of reclaimed water that you won't be able to use if this rules goes through next year.
"Many of them are very limited in their ability to store reclaimed water," says Jenkins. He says it would create an expense for them.
The next meeting is scheduled for July 1st at 10 a.m. It's at the Department of Environmental Protection on Baymeadows Way.
