The first of eight sets of scores from the 2008 F-CATs are released, with mixed results depending on your grade

We are getting our first look at how Duval students performed on their Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

The scores for the writing portion the test were recently released and it painted a mixed picture for our students. 3% less 4th and 10th graders scored proficient which is the grade on which our schools are evaluated. 70% of 4th graders and 76% of 10th graders reach the mark of proficient. The state wide average was 77% of 4th graders and 78% of 10th graders receiving proficient grades.

However, there was positive news from the 8th grade results. 3% more Duval County reached the grade of proficient, bringing the percent of 8th graders to 87% just one point behind the statewide average of 88%.

"The thing that is significant about 8th grade, is this is the fourth year in a row that we've made improvements in the 8th grade in their writing scores," said Tim Valentine, Executive Director of Instruction Research and Accountability for Duval County Schools.

He stressed that this is on one of eight parts of the test on which our schools will be grade. And from the principals he talked to, thinks we will see improvements in other portions of the test.

The remaining results will come out piece by piece over the next several weeks. You can see a district by district break down of F-CAT scores and see how our schools measure up Here.
