Early First Round Thoughts At THE PLAYERS
Just a few early thought from THE PLAYERS Championship.
So many of the players talked about how worried they were that the greens would be firm and holding shots into the greens would be tough. But so far, it doesn't look like that's the case today. Among the early rounds, there are a lot of birdies...even a few eagles mixed in.
That could change as the course dries out under the sun, and especially if the wind picks up.

I'm going to be interested in watching to see who steps up this week. Without Tiger Woods, recovering from knee surgery, there is certainly a vacuum at the top of the leaderboard that some one will have to fill.
I'm also intrigued to see a couple of two time champs, Fred Couples and Steve Elkington doing well early. Nobody has ever won back-to-back years at THE PLAYERS (Phil Mickelson is trying to do so), and only Jack Nicklaus has won three. We'll see if any of those records fall this week.
