Cops Taking Cars HomeGasoline prices are hurting everyone, but some Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer's are still able to drive their cars home to other counties. Around 1,600 officers are allowed to drive their cars home as part of the Assigned Vehicle Program. But some in other counties are noticing JSO cars in their neighborhood. "When a vehicle is used outside the county, it can only be to travel to and from work," JSO's Lauri Ellen Smith said. Only officers who live within ten miles of the county are allowed to take their cars home. "For those that live beyond that they secure their cars at a secure location when they are off duty," Smith said. She says the program has helped to fight crime as off duty officers frequently respond to calls and will stay as is for now. She says they responded to more than 160-thousand calls in 2006.
