Time For Florida To Spend?
Despite recent budget cuts Florida Tax Watch says we should be spending more money.
They are backing a plan to spend a half a billion dollars on roads, affordable housing, the space center, port operations, tourism advertising, water projects and more. The money would come from reserves were it only earns 3-4% a year. Tax watch says spending it could result in 100% or more in gains.
"It's really an investment that keeps on giving to the people and tax payers for Florida for many years to come," Dominic Calabro with Tax Watch said.
He says spending this money is more of an investment that will result in long term gain for the state. That it could as much as double our gross domestic product over time, and bring in 100-million in new revenue in just the first year.
He says this would jump start our state economy much more effectively than sending money back to Florida tax payers.
"After this money is spent, we're going to have roads that people are going to drive on for decades. We are going to have homes that people have lived in, have grown their families, their children and sometimes their grandchildren, " Calabro said.
He says the money will had tens of thousands of new jobs and that in turn will bring money back into the state coffers to replace what we spent. All this would have jump start what he calls economic stagnation here in Florida.
He said the plan has the support of the governor and is picking up support in the Florida legislature.
