They will be in charge of personnel, intelligence, operations, planning, finance and command for the U.S. Fourth Fleet.

Admiral James Stevenson says the Fourth Fleet will be responsible for U.S. Navy ships, aircraft and submarines operating in the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The move also elevates the fleet from one star to two stars - giving them greater command and control of their resources and destinations.

Stevenson says it's an important move for Mayport as well.

"For Mayport, it's an increase in stature, as far as, we are now basically on par with other areas of operation and their fleet," says Stevenson.

The new operation takes effect this summer.
