Is Corrine Looking For a Job?

Since I spoke with Congresswoman Corrine Brown at a job fair she organized and sponsored this morning, a clear question came to my mind. "Congresswoman, are you looking for a job?"

I figured since so many politicians are considering promotions ahead of the 2010 elections, I'd get an interesting response. The longtime lawmaker did not disappoint.

"You always have to look for another job," she joked. "Some people are looking for jobs all the time."

Congresswoman Brown is not one of those people...at least not recently. Brown was elected to the U.S. House in 1992, and has served the same district streatching from Jacksonville to Orlando ever since. Her career in the House followed a ten year stint in the Florida legislature.

But, believe it or not, one of the most dynamic voices in Florida politics could have her eyes set on a new seat.

"So, you may be looking for a new job, I hear," I pressed the Congresswoman after a few more job fair related questions.

"We are looking at possibly forming an exploratory committee," Brown offered in response. "We did a poll."

"For which race?," I cleverly countered.

After a silence lasting several seconds, I jumped in again.

"Is that a no comment."

"No comment, today," she finally relented.

But Brown's talk of an exploratory committee sure is intriguing and had WOKV's news room talking today.

In reality, I only see two jobs (in addition to her current House seat) in Brown's future. One, is a run for Governor. That possibility was greatly reduced this afternoon when I was sent an email naming her, and the rest of Florida's Democratic Congressional Delegation, officially endorsing state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink.

So, all the leaves in my mind is a bid for the U.S. Senate...and a shot at a general election match-up against the popular Governor Charlie Crist.

Brown's run for the U.S. Senate would also add another big-name Democrat into a crowded field that includes south Florida Congressman Kendrick Meek and state senator Dan Gelber.

I'm not sure Brown becomes the clear frontrunner for the Democratic nomination if she runs, but she's certainly not a longshot either.

We'll have to wait and see if the Congresswoman is in the job market soon.
