The Florida Fight is Finally Over
It seem like ancient history; but the Florida fight began well over a year ago, when, in an act of primary leap-frog, the state legislature moved up the Presidential preference vote to late January and setting off a Democratic delegate debate that lasted until Barack Obama's coronation in Denver earlier this summer.
The fight for Florida was strong for GOP White House hopefuls, too. For a young reporter covering his first Presidential election, the opportunities were mouth-watering.
Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and John McCain were all regular visitors to the River City in the fall of 2007. Even Fred Thompson, roundly criticized for under-campaigning, made a rare political appearance to rally supporters at the Jacksonville Landing.
More money than ever was spent asking for your vote. Won't you miss the daily deluge of "Straight Talk" and "Change we can believe in"? I will.
Won't you miss the daily updates from Quinnipiac, Zogby, Mason-Dixon and wokv.com polls? I will.
Won't you miss the dueling yard signs, controversial robo-calls, registration drives and sticker-clad bumpers? I will.
For so many political junkies (myself included) Election Season is the football playoffs, Final Four, Bowl Championship Series and Ryder Cup all rolled into a few glorious months...And I will miss it.
At least until 2012.
