Priority Number One Trouble
All week, top officials of the Obama Administration were hammered on in House and Senate hearings over the need for job creation.
Much of that flak came not from Republicans, but from Democrats, who are feeling the heat back home and are worried that the White House isn't doing enough to help.
How about this press release from Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), one Democrat running for re-election this year:
"U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) aggressively questioned U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on fiscal policies that she believes have focused too heavily on Wall Street at the expense of Main Street at a Senate Budget Committee hearing."
"Assistance was immediately provided to Wall Street, but a year later it remains absent on Main Street," Murray said to Geithner. "And I'm angry," the release quoted her.
(I watched the hearing - let's just say, if she was angry, it didn't really show. But you get her drift.)
"I guess I don't understand," said Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), "the vision of the administration when it comes to putting in place economic policy that works for our nation in today's economy and the economic climate today."
Did I mention that Lincoln is running for re-election this year?
But while every Democrat is talking about doing something on jobs, no final bill has emerged.
It led to reporters being treated to an odd scene, as Senate Democrats held a news conference Thursday morning on jobs legislation, but didn't release any details and wouldn't say what would be in a final bill.
"We're not going to, in effect, step on our message," said Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) to a somewhat puzzled group of reporters, as Reid said there would be votes as early as Monday on a jobs bill.
My colleagues in the Press Gallery tried not to snicker too much at that line, and sure enough, the Senate left town without a jobs bill being laid down by Democrats, as they fight with each other over what should be in that measure.
And now that Democrats only have 59 votes, things get even more interesting.
This will be a fascinating year to cover the Congress.
