Blogger Feels The Bitter Heat

As more and more "citizen" journalists and bloggers ply their trade on the internet, it is very interesting to see how they deal with angry readers.

Katharine Seelye wrote a good piece in the New York Times on Wednesday, detailing how blogger Mayhill Fowler had gotten a lot of guff after she posted audio from an Obama fundraiser in San Francisco, where Obama said his now infamous "bitter" remarks.

It answered the question of where the audio came from, as Fowler said she was openly using a digital recorder.  Others were recording Obama's remarks on their cell phones or with digital cameras.

Fowler has given the limit of $2,300 to the Obama campaign, even as she has been a "reporter" who has followed Obama on the campaign trail.

(Note to my readers - no "real" journalist gives money to politicians.)

Fowler said she struggled for days over whether she should publicize the "bitter" remarks, which she instantly recognized as being something different from Obama's usual stump speech.

Her efforts earned her a lot of flak from the blogosphere, especially those who support Obama.

"Did Mayhill Fowler Intend To Damage Barack Obama?" thundered one post on dailykos.

"Why isn't any of the outrage focused at the Huffington Post for allowing her to publish her BS?" asked another.

"Mayhill Fowler is a duplicitous hack," read one on Kos.

"It's like the liberal blogosphere has issued a fatwa against me," Fowler told the New York Times.

I know I don't win many arguments with people about media bias.

But this is a fresh reminder that when people are presented with a story they don't like, they can get a bit aggravated with the news media, whether they're Democrats or Republicans.

Shoot the Messenger is a fairly bi-partisan practice.

One thing I did discover about Fowler's original post was that she wrongly identified the member of Congress who was introducing Obama at the San Fran fundraiser.

On the page where she posts the audio of Obama from her digital recorder, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fowler/obama-exclusive-audio-on_b_96333.html, Fowler identifies the person as Sheila Jackson Lee.

Sheila Jackson Lee is a Democratic Congresswoman from Texas who happens to be a Hillary Clinton superdelegate.

After listening to just a few words of the tape, it's obvious the speaker is Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) - an Obama superdelegate.
