Hillary Clinton Goes to What State Today?

The message popped up on my blackberry minutes after I had given my two kids a bath on Tuesday night. "Hillary Clinton Visits Michigan."

I will admit that I sort of shook my head and closed my eyes, like the message was going to get fuzzy and fade away, dream-like.

But upon further review, it was still there once the kids had been dispatched to their beds.

Obviously, Michigan isn't exactly on the primary schedule right now, as leaders there try to force a deal on a primary replay on June 3.

As you know, Michigan had a primary back on January 15th, an effort led by the Democratic-controlled legislature and the Democratic Governor to make that state more of a player in the 2008 Presidential race.

But that plan didn't work out for Democrats, because the national party cracked down on Michigan and Florida, stripping their delegates for holding a primary before Super Tuesday on February 5th.

In recent days, Michigan Democrats in the legislature have been laboring to cut a deal on a primary replay in June. So far though, a final agreement has been eluding officials.

While not knowing the inside scoop on Clinton's visit, I think I can close my eyes and figure out this trip pretty easily. She's going to Michigan to push for a re-vote, because she needs some extra delegates.

At the same time, the rhetoric from the Clinton camp is definitely getting turned up a notch when it comes to a re-vote in Florida and Michigan.

"The Obama campaign is engaged in a passive-aggressive effort to disenfranchise the voters of Michigan and Florida," declared Clinton spokesman Phil Singer on Tuesday.

If you are the Clinton Camp, you want to do everything you can right now to make it look like the Obama Forces are opposing a re-vote in Michigan and Florida, one reason the issue is sure to get more testy in coming days.

Without a primary replay in Florida and Michigan, Clinton's road to the nomination gets tougher. She might well still win states like Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana, but Florida would suit her better.

With no primaries for another four weeks, listen to the rhetoric. Watch the jabs. This race isn't over and both sides are ready for battle.

But it still isn't a really negative or bitter race. At least not yet.
