Del Rio Circling The Wagons
It was a strange day with the Jaguars on Wednesday.
First, in the locker room, middle linebacker Mike Peterson did his best not to say something he would regret, but he made his stance clear on where he felt he stood.
"Right now, I'm on the sideline [in practice]," Peterson said. "This is the NFL. The season's not going well? Older guy? Move him out of the way and get ready for next year."
What is Peterson referring to? The Jaguars practice of letting oft-injured veterans go in favor of younger, healthier players. It happened with Donovin Darius. It happened with Chris Naeole (although he was brought back this year), and it happened with Marcus Stroud (who was traded in the off-season).
Peterson isn't about to go in that direction, at least, not of his own accord.
"I'm a different breed. I go down swinging. I'm not just going to hand it to anyone on a platter. If I get a chance to compete, I'll compete."
Del Rio would not comment on Peterson's status on Wednesday. Peterson travelled with the team but was made inactive against the Lions last Sunday.
As for the rest of Del Rio's press conference, it only lasted about 4 1/2 minutes. He clearly wants to create an "us against the world" mentality this week.
"We basically feel like Goliath is coming to town," Del Rio said of the 9-0 Titans. "We'll say a few prayers and see if we can find a few pebbles, load up our slingshots. The game has been moved to [4:15], so there are those who want to see the Titans get their 10th win out there. We look forward to it."
And if that weren't enough, the list of players who didn't practice on Wednesday read like a rundown of the Jaguars most recognizable names: John Henderson (knee), Greg Jones (ankle), Matt Jones (thigh), Rashean Mathis (foot), Paul Spicer (thigh), Fred Taylor (neck) and Troy Williamson (Groin).
