Position Battles Shaping UP
It was just day two of training camp, but the some of the battles for starting sports are already starting to take shape.
Most notably, the competition for the starting left tackle position between incumbent Khalif Barnes and the challenger Richard Collier.
Most notably, the competition for the starting left tackle position between incumbent Khalif Barnes and the challenger Richard Collier.
"I don't look at it as competition with Khalif," said Collier. "I look at it as how I make myself better. I'm just going out trying to get better every day."
One "what-if" question that may have to be answered is whether Barnes, who has been a starer basically his whole football life, could deal with being a backup.
"To be totally honest with you, I don't think so, I don't think I could be one." Barnes admitted to me. "If Rich continues to do a good job and thew want him as the starter, we'll talk then about what that means for me."
Saturday, Collier worked with the first team, then Sunday, Barnes worked with the ones.
Ups and Downs: Recently signed first year wide receiver Ryan Hoag made three terrific catches during the morning session, including a finger-tip grab on an out route, but later, he dropped a come-back route on a pass that was right between the numbers.
Catch of the Day: Troy Williamson, who was criticized in Minnesota for dropped passes has looked terrific since coming to Jacksonville. Sunday morning, he burned the defense for a long touchdown on a skinny post. Backup quarterback Todd Bouman's pass was right on the money.
Ready for Pads: Monday evening, the Jaguars will put the pads on for the first time a camp. The evening session will feature the always entertaining "Oklahoma Drill." It's always a crowd pleaser. The drill features one offensive player (usually a lineman or tight end) blocking one defensive player (usually a lineman or linebacker) with a runing back trying to get through a small area.
