Matt Jones Will Be In Camp, Says Del Rio
Despite an off-season cocaine arrest, Matt Jones will still be a Jaguar when the season begins, according to head coach Jack Del Rio.
The head coach said, on the season debut of The Jack Del Rio Show on WOKV that he and Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver discussed the situation surrounding the former first round pick on Tuesday.
"Matt will be in camp," Del Rio said. "We feel like this is something that he'll have to deal with personally with the law. We expect to have him in camp on time on Friday and we'll help him work through it."
There had been speculation that the Jaguars would part ways with Jones after his arrest. Instead, Del Rio says he wants to help the receiver become a better man.
"He feels bad," Del Rio said. "But he understands that he'll have to deal with this head on like a man."
With Jerry Porter expected to be out until the regular season and Mike Walker still not totally ready to go 100% on his knee, Jones will have ample opportunity to show what he can do on the field. His arraignment is scheduled for August 11.
What others are saying
- Kent's CommentsThese are professional athletes, grown men, who should know the difference between right and wrong. As my father always told me "nothing good happens after midnight", get ur butt home. The problem is not with the coaching staff, Kent wants Jack Del Rio to run a baby-sitting service. The problems with some players' after hours crap is a lack of personal discipline. What a player does in his off time is his and if he can;t keep his nose clean, then it will be lopped off by law enforcement. Let us also not forget that this is a miniscual fraction of the team, as a whole, and we should be singing the praises of the other players who do their jobs, go home and act accordingly. To use Kent's logic, the coaching staff is equally responsible for the 95% of the players who watch their P's and Q's and exhibit the sort of behavior that is becoming a professional athlete. Get a life Kent!
- Pattern of Practice Mike Tice StyleMy name is Kent. I know everybody is being harsh on the Jaguar players increased run in's with Law Enforcement as they should be. However, I feel more blame and responsibility needs to be placed on the coaching staff. Since 2006 8 Jaguar players have had run ins with Law Enforcement. Coincidentally, that's the same year Mike Tice was named Tight Ends coach AND Assistant Head Coach. The Assistant Head Coach has input on disciplinary or lack of policies. You remember the Legacy Tice left with the Vikings right? Well, it appears to be rearing it's ugly head here and it is following him here. Discipline starts at home and maybe it's time for Mr. Weaver to clean house with coaches who have strict discipline and less egos before a player dies. You can gloss over it all you want, but the culture that occurred in Minnesota while Tice was there has followed him here. You can't argue that.
Kent Bell - Matt JonesI believe that if Matt can get thru these tuff times he will grow up and dedicate himself to being a good NFL wide reciever. This will be his last chance.
- Matt JonesEven folks in AR have lost their faith in him.
