What To Watch For At Mini Camp
Mini-camp opens today with the Jaguars scheduled to hold five practices over three days. Three of those practices are open to the public (Friday 4:00 pm, Saturday 10:30 am, 4:00 pm).
Want some tips? Here's what I'll be watching for this weekend.
- Tougher Del Rio-Last year, Jack Del Rio eased the rookies into the mix. That won't be the approach this year. Del Rio says he wants to shock the rookies into the NFL lifestyle. I'm also going to be interested to see how much more intense the practices will be. Teams aren't allowed to have contact drills at mini-camp, but I do expect a more focused camp than we saw last year.
- Slimmer Garrard-The Jaguars quarterback has dropped around 20 pounds this off-season. How will that affect his play? We'll get a preview this weekend. Garrard was the most often hit quarterback in the league last year (although that's certainly not a by-product of Garrard's size). It's not a huge worry, but some guys play better heavier. I'm not going to be too critical of Garrard's completion percentage or the like, but I'll want to see how he works with the new receivers.
- Torry Holt-Yes, Tra Thomas was also a big off-season acquisition, but in mini-camp, the big guys don't really get to do much. No pads, no hitting. We should be able to get a feel for Holt, though. He put on a clinic at his press conference on Thursday. As much as the Jaguars young receivers can benefit from watching film of Holt (and watching him in person), they should all watch the video of that press conference. Holt was conversational, informative and entertaining.
- Rookie Receivers-The Jaguars drafted three wide receivers for the first time in team history. There has been remarkable turnover at that position for the Jaguars. Out are Matt Jones, Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter. Enter Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard and Tiquan Underwood. All of them bring a little different set of tools. Thomas is supposed to be the run after the catch guy in the slot, Dillard the go-up-and-get-it type who has great hands and Underwood is a burner. Will any of them make a difference right away?
- Derek Cox-He might be the most controversial Jaguars draft pick in years. The Jags traded a second round pick next year to pick Cox out of William and Mary in the 3rd round last week. Fans haven't seen him play, so they are worried. This weekend, we'll have our first chance to see his skills on display.
- Who lines up where? Jack Del Rio will tell you that there are no depth charts this early in the off-season. Still, I'll be watching for who lines up with the starters and who works with the reserves. The most interesting position will be at cornerback. Rashean Mathis, of course, will have one spot, but who fills the other? Brian Williams could be there or at safety. If Williams is at safety next to Reggie Nelson, then will we see Cox at one cornerback position or will it be Scott Starks? If Williams is at corner will Sean Considine line up at safety?
Today's morning session is closed to the public, but the 4pm practice is open and features free parking and free admission. The schedule for mini-camp can be found here.
