New Jag Considine Praises GM Smith

With the Jaguars off-season conditioning program underway, the team is getting to know the newest Jaguars, left tackle Tra Thomas and safety Sean Considine.

Considine isn't a star, but he is a tough guy. The kind of high character, blue collar player that Gene Smith really likes.

And you can tell by Considine's comments, that he holds Smith in high regard as well.

"Gene Smith epitomizes what I think of the NFL and football in general," Considine told me. "That guy values character. He values hard work and determination and I'm looking forward to being a part of that."

A thought here on the new head coach at UNF. The Osprey's hired Matthew Driscoll, the former Baylor assistant.

He certainly brings a lot of energy to the position. His passion was on display Tuesday at his introductory press conference. But let me just present both sides of this hire.

On the plus side, Driscoll comes from Baylor. That's a positive in two ways. First, it's a big conference school that had to compete with some of the best programs in the country, like Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Having experienced those road trips and the preparation for those games will be valuable as Driscoll tries to change the basketball culture at UNF.

Second, he was a part of a turnaround at Baylor. When Driscoll joined Scott Drew in Waco, the program was a mess. They were dealing with the murder of a player by his teammate. In Driscoll's first three years as an assistant at Baylor, the team won a total of 21 games. But in the next three, the Bears won 15, 21 and 24 games. That's significant improvement.

Now, a reason for skepticism. I realize that coaching, like most industries, is often driven by who you know, not what you know. But I don't really like the hiring process that UNF followed. New athletic director Lee Moon tried to hire Florida assistant Larry Shyatt for the job. Shyatt turned the job down. Moon previously hired Shyatt at Wyoming...where Driscoll was an assistant.

I'm not saying that Driscoll is the wrong choice because Moon worked with him before. But it begs the question: how comprehensive a search did Moon really do? His first choice and his second choice were both guys he knew and who had previously worked for him. That "keep it in the family" thinking can backfire. Just as the Gators and Ron Zook.

I hope UNF gets the program back on the right path. It would be great for the UNF-JU rivalry to be about more than just georgraphy. Maybe one day, the Dolphins and Ospreys will meet for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Finally, I'm heading to Augusta today for my first experience at the Masters. I'll blog about it tomorrow.
