Jaguars Draft Analysis
Here is a pick by pick anaylsis of the Jaguars draft selections, including what would make the pick a good pick or a bad pick.
1st round-Eugene Monroe-Offensive Tackle-Virginia.
Watch the video of Monroe being picked
It's a good pick if: Monroe lives up to his reputationas the best pass blocker in the draft. He can become a 10 year starter at left tackle for the Jaguars.
It's not a good pick if: He doesn't improve as a run blocker. Although there is very little chance that this will be considered a flop of a pick.
2nd round-Eben Britton-Offensive tackle-Arizona
It's a good pick if: Britton becomes the eventual starter at right tackle and becomes a fixture at that position.
It's not a good pick if: his intensity becomes an obstacle to his development and not a motivator.
3rd round-Terrance Knighton-Defensive tackle-Temple
It's a good pick if: he adds depth to the defensive line right away and challenges to become a starter in his first year.
It's not a good pick if: he can't adapt to the big jump in competition from Temple to the NFL.
3rd round-Derek Cox-Defensive back-William and Mary
It's a good pick if: Cox is the next in the line of small conference players the Jaguars have unearthed (Rashean Mathis, Justin Durant, and to a lesser extent, Brian Witherspoon) who makes a comfortable transition to the NFL. The Jaguars believe that Cox can be a starter right away. They gave up a second round pick in next year's draft to move up to get him.
It's not a good pick if: his measurables, especially a sub-4.4 second time in the 40 yard dash, don't translate to the field in the NFL.

4th round-Mike Thomas-Wide Receiver-Arizona
It's a good pick if: Thomas becomes an impact player in the slot and on returns. He was very productive in college, leading the Pac-10 in career receptions with 259. He's a slot receiver who is more of a possession guy, averaging 12.5 yards per catch, despite his sub-4.3 second time in the 40 at the combine.
It's not a good pick if: the savvy that Thomas showed in college doesn't help to get him open in the NFL.
5th round-Jarrett Dillard-Wide Receiver-Rice
It's a good pick if: he continues to be as productive as he was in college, where he led the nation with 20 touchdowns as a senior and turned in three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons.
It's not a good pick if: his lack of speed limits his effectiveness in the NFL.
6th round-Zach Miller-Tight end-Nebraska-Omaha
It's a good pick if: he can adjust to a higher level of competition and a new position. Miller was a high school quarterback, and at 6'4", 235 pounds, he was a very good runner in college. "I'm the poor man's Tim Tebow," Miller said. Miller ran 4.5 seconds in the 40 yard dash.
It's not a good pick if: he can't adapt to a new position. Miller's only experience playing tight end was at the Cactus Bowl, a small college all-star game, where he caught 5 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Also, making the leap from playing against teams like Emporia State and Washburn will be much different than the opposition he will see in the NFL.
7th round-Rashad Jennings-running back-Liberty
It's a good pick if: Jennings makes the team. With a seventh round pick, you are looking for one of two things. Either a guy to play a specific role, or a plalyer who can develop into a regular contributor. Jennings went to Pittsburgh to begin his college career before transferring to Liberty. Jack Del Rio and his staff worked with Jennings at the Senior Bowl and liked what they saw.
It's not a good pick if: he isn't competitive for a roster spot as a rookie.
7th round-Tiquan Underwood-wide receiver-Rutgers
It's a good pick if: Underwood's speed (he ran under 4.4 in the 40) makes him a weapon for the Jaguars offense.
It's not a good pick if: he isn't competitive for a roster spot as a rookie.
What others are saying
- A smart, unsexy draftThe Jags had a great draft. They drafted the best players for their needs and walked away with guys who will make an immediate impact with the team. Fans like Kenny I'm sure were yelling for Crabtree... But Crabtree wouldn't be able to catch any passes with the Jags if Garrard didn't have time to throw the ball. Monroe will start right away and offer great protection. Britton will cause a slipping Pashos to step up his game if he doesn't steal the starting job from him entirely. AND we were still able to address needs at WR with 2 solid picks in later rounds. This is the best draft class for the Jags in a LONG time.
- draftIt is apparent the jags don't really care the had numerous opportunity to draft better people then they did just SELL AND MOVE THE TITANS AND TEXANS AND COLTS UPGRADED WE DIDN'T WAYNE WEAVER DELRIO ISN'T THE ANSWER WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- JAGS STRATEGIC DRAFT: GOOD!!position selections smart, and some of these guys will be starters, or provide depth where needed.
I would have liked to see a higher pick TE..there were several good ones available in Rd. 3
