Should Jags Sign Tra Thomas?
The Jaguars reportedly are talking with free agent left tackle Tra Thomas.
He's 34 years old. Is that a good move?
There are two sides to the argument, but clearly, the Jaguars have a need at left tackle. Unlike the draft, when I advocate taking the best player available, you must address need in free agency.
I don't know what kind of contract Thomas would demand, but if the Jaguars were to sign him, he would come right in and start at left tackle.
As long as the Jaguars aren't saddled with a huge dollar figure, I think Thomas would be a terrific addition to an offensive line that was the biggest area of concern last season.
Let's play what-if here. The Jaguars have re-signed Brad Meester at center. Solid. If Vince Manuwai comes back healthy (and he told me at the end of the year that he felt great and was ahead of schedule), and if Mo Williams is back and ready to go, the Jaguars will have a lot of options on the line.
The starting lineup could include Thomas at left tackle, Manuwai at left guard, Meester at center, Mo Williams at right guard and Tony Pashos at right tackle.
Is it the best line in the league? No, but it would be comprised of veterans who are solid on and off the field. Those are the kinds of players new general manager Gene Smith believes in.
If there is one thing for fans to watch for this off-season, its that the Jaguars follow their stated philosophy, that is Gene Smith's philosophy. Other than releasing Fred Taylor, I think every move that has been made this off-season has fit that philosophy.
