Jags Draft Less Than A Month Away
We are now less than four months away from the NFL draft and I'm impressed with the thoroughness of the Jaguars preparations.
Example? The Jaguars will host Josh Freeman for a pre-draft visit. Freeman, the Kansas State quarterback is expected to be a mid to late first round pick.
So why would the Jaguars bring in Freeman if he figures to go somewhere after the Jaguars pick at #8?
Three reasons. First, they're doing the homework themselves.
Second, the Jaguars may be able to trade back and maybe Freeman is the guy they want after a deal.
Third, the Jaguars are (intentional or not) sending out signals that they're interested in quarterbacks. They were scheduled to bring in USC quarterback Mark Sanchez last week. If the Jaguars have a chance to trade back (I think that's the best play at this point), they'll likely find more value, or at least more suitors, if a quarterback is in play.
Do I think the Jaguars should draft a quarterback? Yes. Should they do it in the first round? Not necessarily. There are three things I believe about the draft:
- Every year you should either draft a quarterback, or at least, sign a draftable quarterback. You never know when you might find the next Tom Brady or at least, Derek Anderson.
- All thing being equal, draft big guys. There are only so many big guys to go around. If you have a chance to draft, say a wide receiver or a tackle, and you've graded them about the same, take the tackle.Every time.
- Cutback runners in college are a risky pick. Two examples of this are former Florida State wide receiver Peter Warrick and New Orleans Saints utility man Reggie Bush. Both were explosive and dangerous in college. Their highlight reels were filled with great cutback runs. The cutback isn't so easy in the NFL. Defenses are just too fast. Warrick was recently signed by the Bloomington Extreme of the Indoor Football League and Bush has never lived up to the expectations of being the next Barry Sanders.
That all being said, the Jaguars are in the process of rebuilding their roster and they need picks. Trading back and picking up extra picks, would be the right move for the long term.
By the way, Jack Del Rio appeared on NFL Network's NFL Total Access show last week. Here's the video. What others are saying
- CRABTREEthis should all be moot if crabtree slips to them in the first round like I've seen in a few mocks. draft crabtree and sign a veteran like holt to mentor him and you could have a great professional over the next couple of years. but if that doesn't work absolutely trade out of this pick
- Jags do have a 2nd round pick Daryl...Obviously you are not much of a fan. You are just one of those people that love to complain about everything and be negative.
- Jags have a second round pickpick 39, second round. First poster is misinformed.
- draft.no second rounder? New to me.
- The draft wont mean that much to the Jags. They have no 2nd round pick and they have watched a ton of W.R.talent go to other teams in free agency.Someone is sitting on thier thumbs and we can get ready for another season of dissapointment.
- Go !aguarsTrade down and get more picks!!!!
- DraftLess than four MONTHS away huh? Wow, the draft seems closer than that to me. Anyways, I agree with the idea of trading back. I hope they don't draft Sanchez at #8. That would not be the smartest move with Garrard still in his prime and making big money.
- TaylorFred Taylor was a running back...
- JagsI really hope they pick a good wide receiver that will be around a while like Fred Taylor was.
- JagsI really hope they draft better than they have in past years.A quality receiver would be good that will be around for a few years like Fred T was.

Anyway Sanchez is way too overrated and only played a handful of games and in none of them did he show himself to be spectactular even in a weak conference.
I like the Jags trading back and scooping either Moreno or Freeman. Moreno would provide immediate impact and Freeman would be an awesome developmental project.
