It Had To Happen

The Jaguars release of Matt Jones had to happen.

Yes, the Jaguars now have lost both of their starting receivers from 2008.

So what? There were few highlights from the wideouts. Reggie Williams has been allowed to walk in free agency, Jones has been released and there is looming court trouble for Dennis Northcutt.

All off-season, general manager Gene Smith has been preaching one theme: character.

Character doesn't just mean staying out of trouble off the field. It means being a pro, dedicating yourself to your job. Jones never seemed to totally embrace that approach. So does this move send a message?

"There is a message," Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver told our newspartner, Channel 4. "We have certain standards and people who go across that line, we won't tolerate."

You have to respect the Jaguars adherence to their stated approach this off-season. Character is driving the decisions. They're also trying to get younger. That's why players like Fred Taylor and Paul Spicer were let go.

So what are the Jaguars left with at wide receiver? Well, there is Northcutt, who played well at the end of the year when Jones was suspended. Mike Walker, who shows the skills, but hasn't been able to stay on the field because of injuries. Troy Williamson is still around, but he didn't show much last year (5 receptions, 30 yards, one touchdown). DeJuan Woods showed some promise in training camp, but he's not a game breaker. Nate Hughes is also on the roster.

The cupboard is pretty bare. They can't address it all in the draft. They're going to have to bring in some bodies in free agency.

"Free agency is not over and the draft is coming up, so we'll see," said Weaver.

What others are saying

  • Jags
The Jags won't be .500 again for at least another year or two. MJD will have to do it all on his own, without FT. That spells injury or he will wear down. This has nothing to do with character. This team is cutting everything to the quick. With just an "average" QB, no more WRs, only 1 RB, and an "average" and getting worse every day defense.....good luck. Have fun moving to LA.
