This Can't End Soon Enough

Since I arrived in Jacksonville and began covering the Jaguars in November of 1996, this is the worst stretch of football that I've seen from the Jaguars.

True, the Jaguars have had losing streaks, but the Jaguars have now lost 4 straight and 6 of their last 7. The only win in that stretch? Winless Detroit.

I tried really hard to find bright spots yesterday. And there were a few. I detailed them in my story on our Jaguars Blog.

But to be honest, those few bright spots are so few and far between that at one point in the third quarter, I turned to Executive Producer Joe Fortunato and said "This can't end soon enough."

Joe tried to disagree, but he couldn't. I don't think anyone can.

The Jaguars offense has been putrid. The defense has been average at best (and somehow, by comparison, the defense has seemed pretty good).

The worst season of the Jaguars from my perspective, was 2000, because the Jaguars fell so far short of the expectations. That is, until this season.

I'll say it now: this is the worst season in Jaguars history. If the Jaguars don't win again (and that's not out of the question), they'll tie the 1995 team for the worst record in Jaguars history, 4-12.

Now the good news. This doesn't have to carry over to 2009. We've learned this year that momentum ends when the season ends.

The Jaguars can be contenders next year if a few things happen:

  • They get Vince Manuwai and Mo Williams back playing at their previous levels at guard
  • They address the left tackle position and make center competitive
  • They lock up Maurice Jones-Drew to a long term deal
  • David Garrard turns things around
  • The Jaguars improve their wide receiving corps. Right now, it's as bad as the offensive line.
  • Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves improve as pass rushers
  • John Henderson and Rob Meier play better and they add at least one more contributor at defensive tackle.
  • The Jaguars find a defensive approach that suits their personnel
  • The punting game improves
  • And perhaps most importantly, the Jaguars get back to being a physical team. A tougher training camp can help here.

If the Jaguars complete that checklist, they can be a contender in 2009.

  • Worst season ever
Cole, I have to really agree with you. I know I'm not as knowledgable about football like you are but I figure I know just as much as the next person. I've following football since I was ten years old. I grew up with the likes of Terry Bradshaw and the Iron Curtain (Steeler defense), Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys, Kenny Stabler and the "hated" Oakland Raiders (no disrespect to Pete Banazek your compatriot) and Bob Griese and the Miami Dolphins. I grew up being a fan of the lowly Denver Broncos who for years were the doormat of the AFC West. I watched while my team went to four Super Bowls and lost by larger and larger margins but the fans stuck by the team through thick and thin. They believed no matter what(or how bad the team was) and in 1998 (when the franchise was 38 years old) won the first of two Super Bowls.

I just wonder what the Jaguars can do as a team. They want to be a Super Bowl calibre team but in my opinion they have a long way to go. Fred Taylor was right about the chemistry - they have none. When the Jaguars go out on the field I see eleven men playing football but not as a team. They have a long way to go before they play on the same level as the Colts and the Patriots. Both teams play like a well-oiled machine because when a player gets injured there is someone else to move into that spot and they do it effortlessly.

I've been a season-ticket holder for a few years now and have sat back and listened to the complaints of these fans. The Jaguars have some of the ficklest fans I've ever seen. We were spoiled by success too soon. I feel we need not only a management shake-up but a team shake-up. I think that the team needs some kind of spring cleaning but what? How about some of the coaching staff? How about a better draft (or talent scout) person as our draft picks seems to be busts lately? How about not paying them such huge salaries for mediocre performancs?

David Garrard hasn't been on top of his game this year and he seems to be running for his life since he has no protection from the offensive line (too many injuries?) The receivers aren't very good - too many dropped passes?, they seem to have problems running the patterns. And now our best receiver is done for the year. What next?

I watched the game against the Texans and the announcers knew what plays we were going to do. Maybe he can improve on his coaching next year since everyone knows what the next play will be. We need a player with good leadership skills(Tony Boselli?) and presence and not afraid to take charge.

What are the chances that ALL of those things will happen? The Jags have a much larger problem than personnel playing better. They have a "team" problem. This team is not designed to compete in the present day NFL. Ball control offense does not work if you cannot make first downs. They cannot run and they cannot pass anywhere on the field. If the defense knows you are going to run, they load up the box and leave a safety deep. This happens over and over again. No team in the NFL can run against 9 men in the box. Everyone knows we are going to run...over and over again.

Defensively we play a standard "plain vanilla" 4/3 defense...no blitzes, no stunts. Every quarterback in the league these days can pick that kind of defense apart....and they do every week.
The run won't work if they don't respect the pass. We need an offense that can complete passes for first downs on first and second down. Once that happens, the linebackers and corners will drop back and we will be able to run.
We also need someone on the team to step into the leadership role and elevate the level of play like a Tim Tebow or a Ray Lewis.
