What Went Wrong This Year?

There are so many theories about why the Jaguars have been disapointing this year. In an attempt to make sense of it all, here is a handy recipe of what really went wrong this year (by percentage):

Offensive line injuries (36%) - The Jaguars averaged 30 points per game in the second half of the season last year. What was the biggest change this year? It wasn't the loss of Ernest Wilford in free agency, it was season ending injuries to Maurice Williams and Vince Manuwai and the injury that put Brad Meester on the shelf for the first month and a half of the season. It's the least glamorous position on the football field, but it's also the most important position group. Even a great quarterback can't succeed without consistent play from the offensive line.

Team Chemistry Problems (21%) - There are several reasons for the change in team chemistry. As I have said and written before, last year's Jaguars team was the closest knit team I have seen in 15 years of covering the NFL. This year with the addition of some big money free agents (Jerry Porter, Drayton Florence) high dollar draft picks (see below) and the off-the-field distractions like the shooting of Richard Collier, Matt Jones' arrest, that team chemistry never developed. Add to the mix some players unhappy with their contracts, like Mike Peterson and the delicate balance of team chemistry never developed.

Draft Disappointments (11%) - It's not just about Derek Harvey not living up to expectations. Or Quentin Groves. If the Jaguars had selected in the spots without trading up, they would, at very least, have found some bodies to develop. But as it stands, the Jaguars emerged from the 2008 off-season five players on the roster: Harvey, Groves, Brian Williams (who has been of little factor), Chauncey Washington (who has been no factor) and Thomas Witherspoon. I believe that the events of this season will have long lasting affects on the way the Jaguars approach the off-season work--not just this year, but in years to come.

Age on Defensive Line (10%) - We saw this coming. Paul Spicer 33 and Reggie Hayward has a lot of miles on his 29 year old legs. It's tough to last in this league when age becomes a factor. What we didn't expect is that those two would have to carry the load at defensive end so much (see Harvey, Groves) and that John Henderson and Rob Meier would look like they were on the back end of their careers. Meier has been a particular disappointment this year. After playing at a high level last year, he hasn't seemed to have the same kind of presence in the line this year and I'm not sure why.

Defensive Coordinator (8%) - Let me start with this: Gregg Williams has proven that he is a good defensive coordinator. But he just didn't fit with the Jaguars this year. His preferred style didn't match with the Jaguars personnel. Jacksonville just doesn't have guys with good blitzing ability. Things just didn't click with Williams and the Jaguars defense, but again, most of it was about the ultimate issue with the Jaguars: not enough good players.

Defensive Back Play (6%) - This has a number of angles. First, Drayton Florence coming in and supplanting Brian Williams may have impacted the team chemistry. Then, Florence was demoted because he apparently can only play man-to-man and not zone. Rashean Mathis has been streaky, Reggie Nelson has not looked good this year. The Jaguars have given up way too many big plays. Some of that is about the lack of pass rush, but some of it is about bad coverage and poor tackling.

Wide Receiver Play (5%) - I'll excuse Matt Jones from this conversation. As for the rest of the receivers? Here we go. Jerry Porter has seven catches. That's a little more than $1.4 million per catch. I'm getting a better return on investment from my 401k. Troy Williamson has four catches--the longest is just 10 yards--not hardly worth the draft pick the Jaguars traded for him. Reggie Williams has followed up a 10 touchdown season with 1 scoring reception. Mike Walker can't stay on the field. Other than Jones, there isn't much to praise among the wide outs.

Missing Marcus Stroud (2%) - This is a popular theory among fans. But I'll ask you this: how much did the Jaguars miss Stroud over the past two seasons when he missed 11 games due to injury? Stroud wasn't the Marcus Stroud of old for years. Still, the way Stroud is playing in Buffalo this year (which is to say, pretty well), he certainly would have been a help to the Jaguars.

Quarterback Play (1%) - Sorry folks. For those of you who only blame or praise the quarterback, there insn't much blame for David Garrard. Despite playing behind a patchwork offensive line and throwing to a group of receivers that has delivered little (aside from Matt Jones), he has still managed to put up respectable numbers.

Head Coach (1%) - The most significant blame for Del Rio could be the lighter training camp, but the fact is, he was trying to avoid the injuries that have done so much to derail the season. A head coach is never without fault, but Del Rio has proven that he is a good coach and it hasn't been coaching decisions that have knocked the Jaguars out of contention.

What others are saying

  • I agree... Another season wasted! I have been a loyal Jag fan since 1995 but this season just seems different. This team is heartless and clueless at times. This team just dosent seem to have very smart players. The light has finally come on for me... The jags have never and will never win anything (at least not for a long time) I guess I hung in there so long for my fav players in #82 and #28 but now that he may be leaving I can finally leave the teal for good! 08 has been my final year supporting the jags.
  • sell the team, give us a break already
Sell the jaguars, give us all a break
another season down the toilet. I GIVE UP! Why i continue to support this team is beyond me. Heres a suggestion: why not try to run fred taylor up the sides instead of up the middle EVERY TIME! Why not try and win a game in the 1st quarter instead of trying to win it in the last 10 seconds of the 4th quarter. Heres a great one too: DONT GIVE WINLESS TEAMS THEIR ONLY WIN! Don't lose games at home.

I'm done....this will be the last year i get season tickets. I've gotten them every year since 1995, but i'm done wasting my time on a team that does not want to play quality football. Besides, the games have gotten boring and going to the stadium is lame. I'd much rather watch them at home with this piss poor quality of play. Its sad really. Its all this town has and to be this pathetic. Don't we pay them enough?
  • What went wrong this year?
I see the faithful are hitting the panic button. I'm not talking about this year but how the Jaguars are structured in years to come. I still feel they have the core of a very good team but are missing one or two key players. Injuries devestated both sides of the ball for Jacksonville this year and even though all teams deal with it, I don't remember it being this bad for the Jags in a long time. The lack of a true deep threat is still an issue too. Oppenants can and do load up the box to prevent the run because they know we're not going to through deep down field. Until that is fixed the Jags will continue to have trouble scoring.
  • Shack needs to go!!
SHack Harris needs to go. He was a big reason it took so long to get rid of Leftwich. He was a part in getting rid of Stroud, which is one reason the defense is so bad this year.Draft picks were a bust. Kalif Barnes should be flippin hamburgers somewhere because he no football player. No reciever except for M. Jones, Dennis Northcut.I think Jack is doing the best he can with what he has which isn't much.
  • correction
Under Draft disappointments; its Thomas Williams that the jags drafted not Brian Williams. I also think that it is incredibly unrealistic of you, the jags, and the fans to have expected much out of Harvey and Groves. There have been precious few DE who have been able to produce as rookies. Give them time to develop.
  • What went wrong
So, If I'm reading what your saying right. In the off season we need to replace the O line, D line, D backs the D coach and all the wide outs except Matt Jones.
Oddly enough, that sounds like a good plan to me
  • What Went Wrong This Year
From the sounds of it last year was really the jaguars year to get to the big game. This year is the start of the downfall for team that either made it or just missed it. Its to bad as i would have liked to see them at the big game this year.
