Del Rio: Jags Haven't Given Up

Despite back-to-back loses to the Browns and Bengals, Jack Del Rio says that his team hasn't given up on the season.

Del Rio says that the team's effort isn't a problem, but the execution has been an issue.

It was interesting to see the results of our poll on WOKV.com where 41% of voters said that the coaching was to blame for the Jaguars troubles this year. That was well ahead of the four other options that included injuries on the offensive line, underuse of the running backs, lack of production from big money free agents and lack of team chemistry.

There are even some fans who are putting Jack Del Rio on the hot seat.

That's just plain stupid.

The environment among many sports fans now dictates if something isn't working, you get rid of it.

Jack Del Rio has proven that he is a good NFL coach. The number of injuries and outside forces that have affected the Jaguars season are significant. In fact, I've never covered a team that had higher expectations to begin the year and then had to endure so many obstacles. The closest team that I can remember to this was the 2000 Jaguars who were coming off a trip to the AFC Championship Game, then were beset by injuries to the likes of Leon Searcy and Fred Taylor and finished the year 7-9.

This year's Jaguars may be in for a similar finish, but that shouldn't lead to major changes in the coaching staff.

It likely will lead to changes in the way the next off-season is approached.

What others are saying

  • Jaguars
It is kind disheartening for the people supporting a losing team, but Detroit has been dealing with it for years, along with Cincinnati. I believe our team will win some more games.

The Richard Collier thing has shaken up the team, just as it did all of Jacksonville, but I can not say how much it affects their playing.

As I watch the game in Cleveland, I noticed it was as if Jaguar players minds were somewhere else. It seem as they were slow to respond a lot of times, and when they did, it was too late, but this business about getting a new coach...that has already been tried.
The players will probably do better on down the line.
  • affecting the team
Why is no one suggesting that the shooting of Richard Collier might be affecting the team still? Their teammate was paralyzed and had his leg amputated, but everyone's supposed to be fine with that? It doesn't take a lot of distraction to throw off a team's intensity and timing, and that's exactly what the Jags have shown: something's off in their intensity and timing. Instead of looking at the coaches, injuries, etc, why not look at the emotional roller coaster the team's been put on all year?
  • Out with Del Rio!
I feel, although Im a lowly fan, that Del Rio has made some poor coaching decisions that has kept this team, on a whole, down. I like his agressiveness, but when you have the two best backs in the league, you should be running more. When you hecide year after year to keep a stinky QB, youre making bad decisions. Its time for Del Rio to go!
