Del Rio May Have Stepped In It
Here's the exchange between Del Rio and me about the Matt Jones situation. Keep in mind that I had been told that Del Rio had gone on Sirius Satellite Radio and commented that Jones would appeal his reported three game suspension by the league.
Cole: Where is Matt Jones' status right now?
Del Rio: There's nothing to report. I have nothing to report on that subject.
Cole: Did you say something on Sirius radio today about it?
Del Rio: No, not today.
Cole: Did you in the past?
Del Rio: Yesterday (laughs). You'll have to go to Sirius Radio and get your information off of there. Go see Pat [Kirwan] and Tim [Greene] and get the tape.
Okay, we did. On the tape, Del Rio says :
"I think that whole Matt situation is going to get resolved over the next couple of days in terms of ... I believe he wants to appeal. So I'm not sure that we're going to be missing him this week. I believe he has a right to appeal and that he's going to exercise that right."
So why all of the tap dancing at Wednesday's press conference? Del Rio may have realized that he said too much on Sirius, and he might have violated the confidentiality agreement involved with the NFL's drug policy. Unfortunately, Del Rio could have simply said something like "I'm not able to comment on that subject. I may have said too much. We're going to have to let the process play out."
Instead, Del Rio decided that he could trick the media and by proxy, mislead the fans.
Here's my advice to anyone holding a press conference: honesty is the best policy. If you don't want to answer the question, say that and give a good reason as to why. Don't try to outsmart the room. Just be honest. It will serve you better.
What does this all mean for Jones this week? He'll play against the Browns, and I expect that by Monday, we'll hear whether the league reduced the sentence or upheld the three game suspension.
What others are saying
- Common SenseJeff, you obviously do not understand the point that Cole is trying to make. It is Cole's professional responsibility to ask Del Rio questions that the public wants to know. If Del Rio does not wish to comment on the question then Cole is merely suggesting that he says just that, "No comment". In other words, don't beat around the bush. It can cause more issues.
But thanks for being a season ticket holder since day one!!
GO JAGS!!!! - Go ColeCole needs to keep asking the tough questions. Great job, Cole. Keep it up. Just got through listening to you and Vic on the Jags Reporters radio show. Enjoyed it as always..
