Rediscovering The Jaguars
The Jaguars enjoyed an epiphay on Sunday. They remembered who they were.
It was a simple approach. Facing an undersized defensive front, and a defense without its best player (safety Bob Sanders), it was clear that the Jaguars HAD to run the football to win.
And that's exactly what they did.
In the first two games this year, I thought the Jaguars gave up on the run too soon. Jack Del Rio will tell you that they didn't convert on third down enough, and he's right. But one of the characteristics of any good running team is a certain hard headedness. Okay, you stopped me once. You better keep doing it because we're going to keep running it.
The Jaguars embraced that approach last October, and it paid off by opening up more options in the passing game in the second half of the season.
Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium, the Jaguars found themselves again.
"We're a power running team," said Del Rio. "That's what we are, that's what we've been, that's what we're good at. We want to develop other aspects to our team, but we are a power running football team."
Maybe the Jaguars coaches were concerned in the first two games that the patchwork offensive line wouldn't hold up, wasn't physical enough. That wasn't the case on Sunday.
There is something beautiful about a football team that understands what they are an embraces that identity.
If the Jaguars embrace that identity (and it appears that Jack Del Rio has), things could go much better in the future.
