What To Expect At Jags Scrimmage

Tonight's scrimmage is the first appetizer for football this season. Call it an order of preseason pigskin tapas.

Here's what you can expect tonight and what I will be looking for this evening:

In the stands

You can sit anywhere in the stadium. There are no tickets. Admission and parking in lots M, N, J, C & D are free. It's always fun to see if folks sit where they have their season tickets or if they move around.

Here's my recommendation for the best place to sit: Section 107 It's just inside the club section, near the tunnel where the Jaguars players will come in and out. If you want to get autographs, you might be able to get the players' attention from Row A.

Of course, the Bud Zone will be open and there will be plenty of socializing going on in there.

The Roar and Jaxson de Ville will perform. So will the D-Line.

Yes, consessions will be available and no, they won't be as expensive as game day. $2 beers, soft drinks and water. Food will be specially priced as well.

If you want to upgrade to VIP seating in the Terrace Suite, you can do so online for $50 per person. That cost covers Chef's Tables, beer, wine, soft drinks, and water. The entire menu for the Terrace Suites looks pretty good to me. You can see it here.

After the scrimmage, the band Boogie Freaks will perform.

Now, to the football stuff. Here's what I'll be watching for tonight:

Wide Receivers: With Jerry Porter and Reggie Williams out of action, who steps up? Mike Walker has been a training camp star. Lets see how he does with the pads on and going full speed. How will Matt Jones respond? He had one very good practice and has made a few big catches, but I want to see much more from Jones before I'm sold.

Dujuan Woods has shown some promise in camp. He's not fast, but he runs good routes and has shown very good hands. Will he tak advantage of the opportunity tonight?

Free agent signee Troy Williamson might be the guy I'm most interested to see this evening. He has looked very good in practice, but now that the pads have gone on, will that change?

Other to watch for: Jacksonville native Jaron Harvey, who is built like Ernest Wilford and wears Wilford's old number 19. Ryan Hoag, a former last pick of the draft. He spent this off-season as a contestant on The Bachelorette where he admitted that he's a virgin. That doesn't have much to do with the scrimmage, but its interesting background information, nonetheless.

Quarterback: Things have been very quiet on the quarterback front. So far, David Garrard has been very sharp and has looked in command. I'm not expecting anything different.

Running Backs: Don't expect to see a lot of carries for Fred Taylor or Maurice Jones-Drew. I'd like to see Greg Jones run the ball. On the rare occasions that he has gotten carries in camp, he's looked nimble and powerful. I anticipate seeing rookies Chauncey Washington and Anthony Cotrone getting some work. They are a study in contrast. Washington is a speedy cut back back, Cotrone is powerful and as much fullback as running back. Jack Del Rio may have to make a decision between the two rookies for a roster spot.

Offensive Line: The line is in flux. The Jaguars are trying to get settled at left tackle (Khalif Barnes and Richard Collier are competing for the starting job), at center (with Brad Meester's future uncertain, Dennis Norman is the starter), and at guard (Vince Manuwai started camp at right guard, but has since moved back to the left side with Mo William at the other guard spot). And then there are the backups. Uche Nwaneri, and Florida rookie Drew Miller are two young linemen to keep an eye on.

Tight Ends: We're still waiting for someone to make a splash. Marcedes Lewis is going to be the starter, but there are a few interesting guys making plays for roster spot. I'm most intrigued by Charles Davis. He's a big, chiseled dude. I'm not sure if he can play yet, but he looks the part. And he was named as "Guy you'd least like to meet in a dark alley" by Big 10 players. That can't hurt.

Defensive Line: Defensive tackle Tony McDaniel is having a terrific camp. He's showing that he can step in and fill the void left when Rob Meier moved into the starting lineup after the departure of Marcus Stroud. We'll see how second round pick Quentin Groves holds up. He won't be allowed to hit the quarterback, but he'll have the chance to show off his pass rush skills. Also, will Reggie Hayward play? He's been fighting a sore hamstring. I don't think that his spot on the roster is locked up because of questions about his health.

Linebackers: We know that Mike Peterson, Darryl Smith, Justin Durant, and Clint Ingram are making this team. I'll be watching to see how rookie Thomas Williams looks. He figures to get lots of work.

Defensive Backs: Fans will get the chance to see new Jaguar Drayton Florence work at cornerback. Another guy to watch is #38 Brian Witherspoon. He's from Stillman College, a Division III school. Witherspoon can really run. He might be the fastest guy in camp. The Jaguars hope he can become a punt returner, but he's also looked pretty good at cornerback.
