One Day Until Jags Report To Camp
Tomorrow, my world changes. My whole life changes. As our Program Director Mike Dorwart jokes (he is joking, right?), when the football season begins, I matter again.
It's a silly thing, really. And I probably shouldn't admit this, but every year, somtime around mid-June, I get the same feeling that I'm just not really accomplishing much.
But as soon as Training Camp opens, it's all hands on deck.
Here's just a taste of what a typical day is like for me during training camp.
I'm in to the palacial studios of WOKV a shade before 5. Yes, I'm the last one on the morning show to get here.
After Jacksonville's Morning News, I have about an hour to check in with our sales staff and our promotions director and anyone else I need to chat with at the office. Then its off to the practice fields at the Stadium.
I usually don't get there before the players do. Watching 80 guys stretch really isn't the key part of my day. After the morning practice, we chat with Jack Del Rio and maybe a couple of players for interviews, then its lunch time. The media eats in the lunchroom at the Stadium.
You have to be careful with your consumption. With all of that food (and its a lot better than it used to be), its easy to put on a few pounds during camp. Not that you could tell a few pounds on me!
After lunch, I head home for a break. That's when I'll update WOKV.com with my thoughts of the day. If you want to get a flavor for what happened in the morning practice or what the players and coaches are saying, bookmark my Jaguars blog and check it everyday before you leave work for a quick fix.
Training Camp can be a grueling for the players. But it's not easy on me either! So when there is a night time practice, I usually get a nap in at this point.
Just a thought on naps: there is a sweet spot when you talk about the effectice length of a nap. Usually 20-30 mintues will give a little boost, but it won't really sustain me. Two hours or more and I'm groggy the rest of the day and will have a tough time getting to sleep at night.
If I could control it (and I can't), I would get about a 70 minute nap in. Enough to refresh and energize, but not so much that it moves in the category of "going to sleep."
So back to the shcedule of the day. If all goes well with my nap and I'm lucky, then it's dinner with my wife before I head back to camp. The night practices usually end around 9:30, so I get back home before 10, write some notes for the next morning's sportscasts and hit the sack.
Now, to be fair, that's a day with two practices, and this year, there are only five of those in the first two weeks of camp (including August 1 with the scrimmage inside the stadium). You can check out the camp schedule here. I don't count special teams practices in this category, by the way.
So that gives you an idea of what my schedule is like during Training Camp. And to be honest with you, I can't wait!
