Making A Plan For Training Camp

With training camp getting underway this weekend, here are some suggestions for fans and the best way to get up close and personal.

  • Best Place to Sit: It depends on the day. Here's a tip, look for the camera towers, the ones that are up in the lifts. Those are located where the Jaguars will be doing most of the work for the day. If you can find a seat near that field, grab it. That's where the action will be.

  • Best Drills to watch: Of course, any time the Jaguars "go live" and have full team participation for a 2 minute drill or goal line, you'll get some action. But I also love to watch the agility drills, especially with the linebackers and defensive backs. You can really see the athleticism during those drills. When he was a rookie, it was easy to see Darryl Smith's great feet. That doesn't always mean stardom, but it gives you an idea about the physical tools a player posesses.

  • Best Day to Come to Camp: Of course, the scrimmage is always a great social event in the stadium, but for camp, Monday night might be the most exciting practice. It's the first practice in pads and its the night they run the "Oklahoma Drill." Lots of contact and lots of energy. Last year, folks were lined up 10 deep to watch.

  • Best Place to Get an Autograph: While the autograph hounds are always right around the walkway between the field and the stadium, its a battle. There is less competition if you wait for the Jaguars as they leave the stadium. There are usually a handful of autograph seekers, but not nearly the number that you'll see at the field.

  • Best Bet to Get Into a Fight: Right Tackle Tony Pashos. There are always fights in training camp. Usually, it's with a rookie and a veteran. The vets like to send a message when the rookies get a little chippy, and Pashos has that kind of attitude. Usually, this happens later in camp as tension mounts and tempers start to flare.
