Are The Jaguars Doing The Right Thing With Matt Jones?
I have to admit, I feel sorry for Jack Del Rio. Tuesday night on the season debut of The Jack Del Rio Show, the Jaguars head coach said that he would not cut Matt Jones right now, and that he wants to help Jones become a "better man."
What a difficult decision to make.
By saying that, Del Rio has put himself in a potentially tricky situation. If Del Rio truly wants to make Jones a better man, will he keep the former first round pick around if he doesn't perform in training camp?
Will Del Rio still feel compelled to keep Jones around if he doesn't perform on the field? What if Jones winds up being found guilty and maybe even jailed? Some tough questions, and I don't have the answers, only Del Rio and Wayne Weaver will be able to answer them.
It reminds me a bit of the Lawrence Phillips story. He was a running back from Nebraska who was kept on the team by then-head coach Tom Osborne despite a violent attack of Phillips' girlfriend. At the time, Osborne, who would go on to become a congressman, said that Phillips needed the structure of football to keep his life together.
Durint and after his brief NFL career ended, Phillips had numerous arrests for violent crimes.
I'm not saying that Matt Jones is a violent criminal, but for Jack Del Rio, cutting Jones right now would be the easiest way to go. Just distance youself from a bad situation. Maybe that is the right way to go.
Another thought: if Del Rio truly wants Jones to be a better man, why is he compelled to keep Jones around? Does he feel a responsibility to him? Maybe. Would he feel the same way if Jones were a former 7th round pick instead of a first round pick? I doubt it.
I'll also look forward to hearing from Jones himself. Del Rio says that he wants Jones to handle things like man and meet them head on. After hearing that, we'll expect Jones to address the situation very early in camp.
What others are saying
- Matt JonesCut Matt Jones if he performs poorly in camp. Leave his personal issues alone. We don't care.
- Matt JonesOnly time will tell if keeping him is the right decision, but standing behind one of the players in trouble shows a lot about the character of Jack and the Jags organization.
